Residential and commercial security jobs aren’t the same thing, even though the underlying technology overlaps. A business has different risks, different hours of operation, and usually a lot more riding on the footage actually being useful if something goes wrong. Here’s what we typically recommend when we’re quoting a business, and why.
Coverage that matches how the business actually operates
A shopfront, a warehouse, and an office all need very different coverage. Entry and exit points, till or cash handling areas, stock rooms, loading docks, and car parks are usually the priority areas, not just a wide general view of the property. We start by understanding how the business actually runs day to day, then design coverage around that, rather than defaulting to a generic camera count.
Higher resolution matters more for business
For a lot of business incidents, whether it’s theft, a workplace dispute, or a delivery discrepancy, footage needs to hold up to real scrutiny. That means being able to identify a face, read a numberplate, or make out fine detail on a product or package. We generally recommend 6MP or higher for business installs, well above the 2MP or lower resolution still common in older or budget systems.
ColorVu for anywhere operating after dark
If a business operates into the evening or overnight, or has areas that need monitoring after hours, we lean toward Hikvision’s ColorVu range. Full colour recording around the clock gives far more usable footage than standard infrared night vision, which matters if you ever need to identify someone or describe a vehicle from footage taken after closing.
Local storage, not cloud dependency
For a business, footage retention often matters for longer periods than a typical home setup, insurance claims, disputes, or investigations can come up weeks or months after the fact. We recommend a proper NVR with adequate local storage rather than relying purely on cloud storage tied to an ongoing subscription. It keeps footage under the business’s own control and avoids recurring costs eating into the value of the system over time.
Alarm integration for after-hours protection
Cameras alone only tell you what happened, they don’t do much to stop it happening in the first place, especially outside business hours. Pairing cameras with a proper alarm system, monitored where appropriate, gives actual real time response capability rather than just a record for later. This is particularly worth considering for businesses with valuable stock, cash handling, or after-hours access.
Getting the scope right from the start
The biggest mistake we see with business security is underscoping it to save money upfront, then needing to add cameras or capability later once a gap becomes obvious. A proper site assessment before quoting means the system’s built around the business’s actual risk areas from day one, rather than patched together over time.
