Signs Your Current Security System Isn’t Doing Its Job

Having cameras or an alarm installed gives a lot of people peace of mind, but that peace of mind isn’t always backed up by a system that’s actually performing. A lot of the properties we get called out to already have something installed, it’s just not doing what it’s supposed to anymore, or never really did. Here’s what to look out for.

The footage is too grainy to be useful

If you’ve ever gone back to review footage and struggled to make out a face, a number plate, or any real detail, that’s usually a resolution problem. A lot of older or budget systems record at a low resolution that looks fine on a small screen but falls apart the moment you try to zoom in. Footage that can’t actually identify anything isn’t doing the one job it’s there for.

Night vision that leaves everything in the dark

Most incidents on residential and commercial properties happen overnight, so a camera that performs poorly in low light is a real gap in coverage. If your footage turns to a washed out blur or barely shows anything once the sun goes down, that’s worth addressing rather than assuming it’s just how cameras work at night.

Blind spots you didn’t know about

Camera placement matters just as much as the camera itself. Systems that were installed without a proper site assessment often end up with gaps, side gates, back fences, or approach paths that aren’t actually covered. You don’t usually find out until you go looking for footage of something specific and realise the angle never covered that spot in the first place.

No notifications, or notifications you’ve learned to ignore

A system that doesn’t alert you to activity, or one so oversensitive it fires false alarms constantly, ends up being ignored either way. If you’ve stopped checking notifications because they’re never accurate, or you never get them at all, the system isn’t giving you the real time awareness it’s meant to.

Recording gaps or a system that’s quietly stopped working

This is the one that catches people out the most. A camera can look like it’s working, the light’s on, the app opens, but the actual recording has stopped, a hard drive has failed, or the time settings have drifted so badly the timestamps don’t line up with reality. The only way to know for sure is to actually check, which is exactly what a proper maintenance visit picks up.

If any of this sounds familiar

None of these issues are necessarily a sign you need a whole new system. Sometimes it’s a placement fix, a firmware update, or a hard drive that needs replacing. Other times, especially with older budget systems, an upgrade is genuinely the better option. Either way, it’s worth getting it properly assessed rather than assuming everything’s fine just because the camera’s still there.
